GOLF

Probably one of the most picturesquely situated golf courses in Wigtownshire is situated at the historic St. Medan's bay, just outside the village of Monreith.

Golfers will want to visit the St. Medan's Golf course (9 hole) on the western coast of the peninsula, with its spectacular sea views. Originally constructed for Sir Herbert Maxwell by James Braid, the course was eventually sold to the club at the beginning of the twentieth century, and remains a popular course.

Whithorn once had a course of its own, located to the right of the road leading out of town from Castlehill; this is now rough grazing interspersed with rocky knolls and whin (gorse) bushes. Wigtown and Bladnoch also has a popular 9-hole course.

Most towns and villages have some sports facilities : Whithorn has an all-weather sports surface, administered by Dumfries and Galloway Council, and a busy bowling club open to visitors. Garlieston has a tennis court and picturesque bowling club just by the bay.
