Mary Queen of Scots’ visit to Whithorn

Mary Queen of Scots, 1542

On 11th August 1563, Mary Queen of Scots visited St Ninian’s shrine at Whithorn, at a time when the new Reformed church already frowned on the practice of pilgrimage. She had been on a Royal progress throughout South West Scotland, so as to be seen by her subjects, consume food-rents and pay homage at the shrine of Scotland’s most famed saint.
